The Human Premium in an AI-Driven Workplace

Stay Ai Wise

As AI becomes capable of producing competent first drafts of emails, reports, presentations, proposals, summaries and plans, the ability to simply generate content becomes less valuable. Instead, greater value lies in the human capabilities that surround the output: knowing which questions to ask, understanding the audience, recognising what matters and exercising sound judgement.

Employees also need to be able to challenge assumptions, recognise when a technically correct response is inappropriate within a particular context, and take responsibility for the decisions that follow. As AI increasingly handles the production of workplace content, these distinctly human capabilities become more important rather than less.

Far from such human capabilities becoming obsolete because of AI, in many workplaces, they are becoming the differentiator.

Consider two employees with access to the same AI system.

The first accepts the first plausible response. The second interrogates it, adds context, spots what is missing, adapts the recommendation and knows when not to use AI at all. They have the same technology but they do not have the same capability. Which is why AI training cannot focus exclusively on tools and prompts.

Organisations need to develop the human premium: judgement, critical thinking, communication, curiosity, domain knowledge and accountability.

AI can increase access to expertise. It cannot remove the need for people to exercise wisdom.

Be AI-Wise

As AI makes production cheaper and faster, human judgement becomes more visible. The future workplace advantage may not belong to the people who can get AI to produce the most.

It may belong to those who know what is worth producing in the first place.

Leadership question:

Which distinctly human capabilities are you deliberately developing alongside AI capability?
